# Blocks

> Group questions into blocks to organize your survey, show several questions together on one page, and randomize content.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Blocks are being released incrementally. We expect the functionality to be on for all customers by October 22nd. \
> Blocks are currently only available in link Surveys.

Blocks let you group related questions so your survey is easier to build, reorder, and randomize. A block can also be used to show sets of questions together on a single page.

Blocks are containers for questions and other blocks. Use them to:

* Keep related questions together while you build and reorder your survey
* Show several questions to respondents on one page with the **Show as a page** option
* Randomize a group of questions, or show respondents a random subset of elements

> [!NOTE]
>
> Blocks replaced the old **Multi-Question: Single Page** question type. The Multi-Question: Single Page question type no longer shows in the **Add question** menu.\
> \
> All Multi-Question: Single Page questions have been converted to Blocks with the **Show as a page** option enabled. Existing surveys that had Multi-Question: Single Page questions will continue to behave as they did before, no action is needed.

## **How blocks work**

* **Blocks are organizational.** A block doesn't change what respondents see unless you turn on **Show as a page** or randomize its contents. Without either, questions in a block are delivered one at a time, in order, just like questions outside a block.
* **Question numbering doesn't change.** Questions inside a block keep the survey's normal numbering (1, 2, 3...). They aren't numbered as sub-questions.
* **Blocks can be nested.** A block can contain questions and other blocks, and there's no limit to how many levels deep you can nest them.
* **Blocks don’t have question numbers.** In the question list, a block shows an icon instead of a question number, along with its name and the number of questions it contains.

## **Create a block**

There are two ways to create a block:

### **Add an empty block**

1. Open a link survey in edit more.
2. In the **Questions** tab, click the **Add Block** button (layers icon) in the toolbar.
3. A new, empty block is added at the end of the survey. It's named automatically (for example, **Block 1**, **Block 2**).
4. Add questions to it by dragging them in, using the **Move option**, or from the block's menu.

### **Create a block from existing questions**

1. Hover over a question's number and select the checkbox that appears. Once one item is selected, checkboxes appear on every question and block.
2. Select the questions or blocks you want to group.
3. Click **Create Block** in the toolbar at the top of the list.

The new block takes the place of the first selected item, and a confirmation shows how many elements were added.

> [!NOTE]
>
> All selected items must be at the same level (for example, all at the top level of the survey, or all inside the same block). If they aren't, **Create Block** is disabled.

## **Select a block**

While items are selected, the toolbar shows selection controls:

* **Select all top-level elements** (checkbox): selects every question and block at the survey level, excluding anything nested inside a block. Click it again to clear the selection.
* **Select All** dropdown:
  * **Select Top-Level Elements**: selects all questions and blocks at the survey level, excluding nested elements.
  * **Select all elements**: selects every question and block in the survey, including elements nested inside blocks.
* **Create Block**, **Move**, and **Randomize** actions for the selected items.
* **X**: exits selection mode.

AI follow-up questions always stay attached to their parent question and can't be selected on their own.

## **Add questions to a block**

To add a new question directly inside a block:

1. Click the block's **More Actions** menu (three dots) in the block header.
2. Select **Add New Question**, then choose a question type.

You can also move existing questions into a block by dragging them or with the **Move** option in the toolbar.

## **Rename a block**

1. Click the block's name in the block header.
2. Type the new name.
3. Press **Enter** or click anywhere outside the name field to save. Press **Esc** to cancel.

Block names are for your team's organization only and aren't shown to respondents. A block keeps its name when you move it.

## **Move a block**

There a two ways to move blocks around in a survey.

### **Drag and drop**

Hover over a question or block and drag it by its grip handle. A dark line shows where the item will land.

* **Drop between items:** a line appears above or below the item you're hovering over. Drop to place the item there.
* **Drop into a block:** hold the item over a block's header. A border appears around the block. Drop to add the item to that block.
* **Drag out of a block:** drag a question above, below, or between items outside the block.

When you drag a block, it carries all of its contents with it, including nested blocks.

### **Use the Move menu**

1. Select one or more questions or blocks.
2. Click **Move** in the toolbar.
3. Choose a destination:
   * **Move to Top Level**: moves the selection out of its current block to the root level of the survey. This option appears only when something in the selection is inside a block.
   * **A block name**: moves the selection into that block.

The Move menu only lists valid destinations. A block isn't listed if all selected items are already in it, and a block can't be moved into itself or into one of its own nested blocks. If there's nowhere else to move the selection, the menu shows "No other place to move the selection."

If you select questions from more than one block and move them into one of those blocks, questions already in that block stay where they are and the others are added to it.

### **How logic is protected during moves**

Sprig keeps your survey logic valid when you move things:

* **AI follow-ups stay with their parent questions.** You can't drop a question between a question and its AI follow-up.
* **Carry-forward questions stay after their source.** A question that carries forward choices from another question can't be moved above its source question.
* **Moves that break skip or display logic, or response piping show a warning.** For example, if moving a question would place it before a question its display logic depends on, Sprig asks you to confirm what you want to do:
  * **Don't move** cancels the move and keeps everything as it was.
  * **Move Anyway** completes the move and removes only the logic rule that conflicts.
* **Moving into a randomized block.** Sprig shows the **Moving will Change your Logic** dialog. If you click **Move Anyway**, the moved item inherits the block's randomization settings and its existing skip logic is removed.
* **Moving into a page.** Moving a question with skip logic into a block with **Show as a page** turned on shows a warning and clears that question's skip logic. Moving it into a regular block keeps its skip logic.

## **Nest blocks**

To place a block inside another block, drag it onto the other block's header, or select it and choose the destination block from **Move**. You can nest blocks as many levels deep as you need.

When you randomize a block that contains a nested block, the nested block moves as a single unit. Its own questions stay together and keep their order unless you randomize the nested block separately.

## **Show a block’s content together on a page**

Turn on **Show as a page** in a block's header to show all questions in that block to respondents on a single screen.

Keep the following in mind:

* **A block set to show as a page can't contain another block set to show as a page.** If a block already has **Show as a page** turned on, any block nested inside it (or any block it's nested inside) can't also be shown as a page.
* **Some question types can't be part of a block set to show as a page.** The following question types can’t be part of a block set to **Show as a page**:
  * MaxDiff
  * Conjoint
  * Consent / Legal
  * Text / URL Prompt
  * Video & Voice
  * Recorded Task
  * Questions that include a prototype
* **Blocks without ‘Show as a page’ enabled deliver questions one at a time.** For example, a block containing an NPS question and a Text / URL Prompt question shows two separate screens.

## **Duplicate a block**

Click the block's **More Actions** menu and select **Duplicate Block**. A copy of the block, including everything inside it, is added directly below the original with "(copy)" added to its name.

## **Dissolve a block**

Dissolving removes a block but keeps its contents.

1. Click the block's **More Actions** menu.
2. Select **Dissolve Block**.

The block's questions and nested blocks move out to the level the block was on, in the same position the block held. No questions are deleted.

If the dissolved block was randomized together with other items, its contents take its place in that randomization. Otherwise, the questions are pinned in place.

## **How blocks work with survey copies and templates**

Blocks, their names, nesting, page settings, and randomization settings are saved with the study and carried over when you duplicate the study or create a template from it.
